I was asked to weigh in on my opinions and figured that I’d written enough that I’d migrate it to a blog post. Here goes.

Big ugly bezel. People like to nitpick. Yes, it’s big and I’d appreciate it a bit smaller, but I also want to be able to hold it without putting my fingers on the UI. I’m not sure people have carried something this large and thin too frequently, but it’s pretty thin to hold on its edges only. This one is definitely complaining for complaining’s sake.

See how he's holding it? Can't do that without a bezel. Want to hold the thing with one hand from time to time? You probably need a significant bezel.

No multitasking. This is a big disappointment for me. The hope that I have is that given that the iteration of the iPhone OS that allows for the iPad is 3.2. Apple was not here to unveil a new version of the iPhone OS as well. My hope is that at WWDC this summer, iPhone OS 4 will come with multitasking and everyone will get over it.

No cameras. I was hoping for a front facing camera because iChat AV would have been sweet. Then I remembered what people look like from under their chin, and realized that there’s never a time that this device is going to make anyone look good via video conferencing. As for a camera on the back, I feel it would be a throwaway, you’re going to have your phone on you at all times or a dedicated camera, what business does this have taking pictures? Sure, it’d be neat, but this is a nitpick feature. Does a 10″ device make sense for taking pictures?

Touch keyboard. Travel back in time two years and go read all the shit talking people did about the iPhone virtual keyboard. That thing is 800x better than any of the physical keyboards on any phone I have ever touched. I type much faster and more accurately on the iPhone’s keyboard. The people complaining about this touch keyboard have not used it. The “iPad model” (guy) that is using it throughout that video is someone I know. I will endeavor to get his opinion.

No HDMI out. Do people really put their hand held devices down next to their TV to watch video content? I don’t understand this use case at all. The information surrounding this topic is also unclear, the iPhone OS changes include information for handling external displays, so there is going to be some manner of connecting it…

The name. I think there could have been better names, but I think people will forget about this one. Seriously? This is a problem for people?

No Flash. I’m a Flash developer and I am mildly disappointed by this. That said, I know why it is not present, and that is evidenced by absolutely -everything- on the platform being under Apple’s control. App Store, CPU, other hardware, OS, everything. Flash is an uncontrollable element. Would I prefer it be included. Of course.

Adapters. All Apple handhelds have adapters. I guess it’d be nice if it were just USB, but it’s not. Oh well.

Not widescreen. Have you ever held a true widescreen device in portrait mode? Tried to use a monitor that is even 16:10 (not even 16:9) in portrait mode? It’s unwieldy. I did it for a week at work as an experiment with my 16:10 monitor. Sure, you can rotate this, but mitigating the usefulness of the device in one mode to help it in another doesn’t sound right.

T-Mobile 3G. Who cares? T-Mobile happens to be incredibly unlike the rest of the world and uses some other spectrum for 3G. They also have the least amount of 3G coverage nationwide. Spectrum and coverage compel me to not care. This is a bigger selling point internationally and people criticizing it are not thinking globally.

Closed App Ecosystem. Nothing new here. The platform is extremely well loved on the iPhone by its userbase. The userbase are the people who matter. The market of Google Voice users that were upset by the lack of a native app is extremely small, and they didn’t all go throw out their iPhones. Whoopdeedoo.

There are a few legitimate complaints here. Flash. Multitasking. The rest of this is bitching for bitching’s sake. I’m surprised people aren’t moaning over the battery being built in. That’s a bandwagon people like to jump on.
